Course Overview
The research activities of the course have centred
on two projects, one on the establishment of choreology studies in
Japan, and the other on the creation of the Miyabi Ichikawa Dance
Collection Archive. The choreology studies project seeks to clarify
the issues faced in establishing choreology as a science by gaining
a full understanding of Japanese and overseas research in each field.
The Miyabi Ichikawa Archive project aims to maintain the dance collection
bequeathed to Waseda by the late professor, and contribute to the
building of a platform for choreology studies in Japan by opening
the collection to the general public. In Japan, specialized courses in choreology are few and far between, and since there are no choreology libraries or museums there are considerable expectations about thus course. The research activities carried out thus far — including study groups and lectures — have resulted in a significant coming together of teachers, students and external researchers, providing a sharp reminder of the need for the course to act as a thoroughly enriched choreology research centre. 1. The establishment of choreology studies in Japan (Yasuko Kataoka, Akira Amagasaki) Objectives: To obtain a firm grasp of the trends in international choreology and vitalize studies of this science in Japan; to collect and evaluate basic information and literature in order to help establish studies of choreology in Japan. 2. Creation of the Miyabi Ichikawa Dance Collection Archive (Yasuko Kataoka, Kazuko Kuniyoshi) Objectives: To catalogue and make a bibliography of the European and Japanese books, magazines, dance performance programme notes and visual images contained in the collection bequeathed by the late Miyabi Ichikawa, a professor at Waseda’s School of Letters, Arts and Sciences.
